my interview with raul

in january 2011, raul did the sound design for the musical "anything goes" at vaskivuori gymnasium, vantaa. after one of the shows, raul sat down with me and we did a little interview.

how have the musical shows been so far?

they have been really great. we had big audiences and almost all the shows were sold out. i heard that people liked it and that's really nice!

who decides which musical is gonna be performed?

the principal of this school, the director and the musical director. because it's a music high school, it's always a musical. it's cool to have these kind of productions, done by schools. it's most like professional theaters and the "actors" are mostly 16 to 19 years old, and the band too. for them, it's really unique. even if they are going to be professional actors later on, it's only a small percent who can get to do these big things.

for how many musicals have you been doing the sound design so far?

i think is probably the 16th. I have been doing the sound for 12 and been in 4 of them on stage.

for which ones on stage?

fame, peter pan and the others i don't remember. it was like 15 years ago ;)

is this actually the school that you went to?

yes, it's my old school.

what was your favourite musical - on stage and off stage?

fame! on stage i was - i don’t know if you know the story - the dark dancer guy. it was nice to do a solo song. that was in 1996. off stage, with the sound stuff, it's really hard to tell. i liked this really a lot. a couple of years ago we had the sound of music which was really cool, and grease a year ago. maybe one I didn't like that much was footloose
